The Cruise Terminal Rotterdam, once the departure point for land movers, is now an icon in Rotterdam. With its rich history, undulating lines and skyline views, it is the ultimate location for national and international events. From 1873 until mid-1970, the Wilhelminakade was home to the Holland-America Line (H.A.L.), where famous steamships like "The Rotterdam" carried thousands of passengers to faraway places. The quay was called "handkerchief quay" because lovers waved goodbye to their departing families with handkerchiefs.
After bombing in World War II, much of the property was destroyed. The rebuilt sheds inspired the terminal's current design, characterized by glass, steel and concrete. With 4,000m2 of flexibly dividable space, the terminal is suitable for a variety of events. Sustainability is important: Meuse water cools the space and heating is regulated with residual heat from power plants and factories.
